Celtics' backup plan if they lose out on Gordon Hayward might be better than the original

The Boston Celtics are in for a busy summer, and although Danny Ainge's plans have been tough to decipher as of this moment, The Vertical's Adrian Wojnarowski shed some light as to what the Celtics are planning and it includes Gordon Hayward, Blake Griffin and Paul George.

The Celtics, according to The Vertical, will first look to acquire Hayward, but have a backup plan and it includes signing Griffin outright. Both plans, as lofty as they may seem, include trying to land George in a trade after they sign either of the two pieces.

Via The Vertical:

"If Boston can't acquire Hayward, Los Angeles Clippers forward Blake Griffin could be a substitute in this free-agency plan to sign a star and then trade for George, league sources told The Vertical."

This is a smart strategy for the Celtics, as they need the cap space to sign a max-level player like Hayward or Griffin before really going for George via trade.

However, George may not still be available by the time the Celtics sign one of the two stars, which is another problem for Ainge and the Celtics' front office. The Indiana Pacers don't have to wait for the chips to fall for the Celtics, but they might have to because Brad Stevens' club may have the best offer George via trade.

Nonetheless, it should be interesting to see what ultimately happens for the Celtics this summer, but it certainly looks like it won't disappoint.
