Bill Belichick has become synonymous with the New England Patriots — right up there with Tom Brady — so any talk of "Darth Hoodie" coaching anywhere else for the rest of his career just seems foolish.
Of course, you can never say never in the NFL. This is the same league that gave us Brett Favre in a Vikings jersey, after all.
Still, ESPN's latest "bold predictions for 2018" piece seems way off regarding its prediction on Belichick and the New York Giants. Bold predictions, by their very nature, are, of course, a bit off the wall, but this take from ESPN Senior Writer Mike Sando just doesn't make any sense.
He thinks, believe it or not, that Belichick will coach for the Giants next season. The whole article is ESPN Insider protected (perhaps thankfully), but 247Sports passed on the pertinent info on prediction No. 26:
26. Bill Belichick will be the New York Giants' next head coach
The reason: Prediction No. 18 had Caserio and McDaniels bailing from New England before the kingdom fell. This prediction flips the script. Belichick becomes the first to leave, allowing the Patriots to continue with Caserio and McDaniels in charge. Belichick gets a new challenge with an organization that remains fond of him from his days as an assistant. The Giants get a coach uniquely equipped to handle whatever might come his way.
The caveat: Why would Belichick leave a championship operation for a floundering one? If he really wanted change, he could have his choice of jobs after Brady retires — whenever that day comes.
This is just absurd. As "the caveat" explained, why in the world would Belichick leave a perennial Super Bowl contender for an organization that has been treading water, if not going backward, since its last Super Bowl win.
The Giants aren't an embarrassment. In fact, they're generally a well-run organization and certainly a well-owned organization. With that said, why in the world would former assistant coaching ties be enough to pull Belichick away from the comforts of Tom Brady, Robert Kraft, and Foxborough?
Steve Spagnuolo is currently serving at the Giants' interim head coach after the team parted ways with Ben McAdoo.
