In a feature for ESPN the Magazine, Adam Schefter revealed how Dallas came close to drafting several other prospects or trading for another quarterback before they took Prescott in the fourth round.

In the first round, the Cowboys wanted Memphis quarterback Paxton Lynch, but they were outbid by the Denver Broncos. Dallas then attempted to trade up to draft Michigan State quarterback Connor Cook, but they were outbid once again - this time by the Oakland Raiders.

After backup Kellen Moore was injured in the preseason, the Cowboys discussed a trade with the Los Angeles Rams for Nick Foles. Dallas was still unsure about Prescott at the time, but they didn't want to part with a late round pick. Foles was later released by Rams and signed by the Kansas City Chiefs.

Later that week, the Cowboys discussed trading for Cleveland Browns quarterback Josh McCown, but the Browns wanted a second-round pick in exchange for him. The Cowboys declined, and opted to take their chances with the rookie Prescott.

Prescott has led Dallas to a 6-1 start, playing relatively mistake-free . It appears as if Jerry Jones made the right decision.
