Everyone is mocking Oklahoma for their laughable response to Baker Mayfield's punishment

Oklahoma announced earlier this week that star quarterback Baker Mayfield would be benched at the start of this weekend's game against West Virginia as a punishment for lewd gesturing he made during last week's Kansas game.

Oklahoma announced earlier this week that star quarterback Baker Mayfield would be benched at the start of this weekend's game against West Virginia as a punishment for lewd gesturing he made during last week's Kansas game.

Mayfield's punishment turned out to be sitting for two offfensive plays before he was inserted into the game. That was also after his teammates took his jersey out to midfield before the game, in tribute to Mayfield since he wouldn't be apart of the captain's circle for the coin toss.

As you can imagine, a lot of people thought the handling of the whole situation by Oklahoma was comical.

Sorry, the @SoonerFootball, Mayfield Jersey thing at the coin toss was pathetic. He grabbed his crotch guys, he didn’t pass away and he’s not a victim! Wow!! pic.twitter.com/sIs3JSupXL

They actually carried Baker Mayfield’s jersey to the captain’s pre-game coin toss like he was dead or something? And he had to sit out 2 plays? That’s embarrassing for OU.

OU taking Mayfield's jersey out to the coin toss is pathetic. He didn't die. He's not fighting cancer, he's just not a captain. Get over it.

OU players taking Mayfield's jersey to the center of the field before the game for the coin toss showed they haven't learned anything. That's something reserved for a class act like Sam Foltz who dies tragically in an accident. #noclass

Considering that Mayfield's punishment was self-inflicted — and that it only lasted two total plays — it appears that many fans weren't exactly going to sympathize with the quarterback in this situation.

On the other fans, Oklahoma fans will likely be able to shrug it off; as of press time, the Sooners have a 45-10 lead over West Virginia.
